16th Century Notation Knife

Based off an extant example from the V&A Museum in London (Museum Number 310-1903). The customer and I wanted to recreate this project as close to the original as possible. The etching was done using historical techniques involving using wax as a resist, hand-detailing the design, and etching in an acid bath of 30 min intervals for 5 hours. Each side of the blade is a different musical piece meant for the benediction and thanksgiving for a meal. The V&A has also produced a short 5 minute video on the knife as well as recordings of the musical notation, which can be found here.

Materials: steel (blade), brass, Kingswood, legally sourced ivory (handle), and gold leaf for the details on the bolster of the knife.
