15th C. Custom Bauernwehr

A custom bauernwehr based off an extant example with and added scabbard.  This robust knife is accented by a shell shaped nagel. The blade is 6150 spring steel and brought to a hand finish. Overall length: 17″ (43.3 cm) Blade length: 11.75″ (29.8 cm) Grip length: 3.875″ (9.8 cm) Weight: about 1 lbs (435 grams) Materials: antler, mild steel, 6150 spring steel, poplar (scabbard core), and leather.

Custom Dagger and Scabbard

A custom dagger based off an extant example with and added scabbard. This dagger has an very elegant almost understated design. The crossguard, pommel, and finial are all carve/filed bronze and the grip is of boxwood. The blade is 6150 spring steel and brought to a hand finish. 1480’s Custom Ballock Dagger

This project is based off of a few historical examples of ballock daggers.  The customer wished to include an engraved pommel cap from a dagger in the Musee de l’Armee in Paris (pictured below).  The customer also chose the blade and guard from a dagger in the Rothenburg museum (pictured below). All parts were hand carved and engraved. Materials: Blade, hardened 1075 steel; Grip, walnut; Pommel cap and guard, bronze.

15th Century Kidney Dagger for a Lady

This piece is based on an original engraving attributed to ‘Master BXG’ around 1470-1490. The customer wanted a custom wood core scabbard to be made along with tooled details.   Materials: Blade, hardened 6150 steel; Grip, walnut; Guard, bronze; Scabbard is poplar and leather.

Bauernwehr

This Bauernwehr blade is based off and example from the Landesmuseum in Switzerland (photos of the original included below). The customer wanted the byknife and pricker to complete the set, and the nagel was also added by the customer as these were usually seen on this style of knife. Custom Pen Knife

A custom knife project made for my former college professor as a gift to be given to him by members of his staff. This project is based off of a few pictoral and historical examples from the 13th century. Materials: The handle is made from box wood and the knife blade is hardened 1050 steel that has been acid etched.

16th Century Notation Knife

  Based off an extant example from the V&A Museum in London (Museum Number 310-1903). The customer and I wanted to recreate this project as close to the original as possible. The etching was done using historical techniques involving using wax as a resist, hand-detailing the design, and etching in an acid bath of 30 min intervals for 5 hours. 15th Century Custom Ballock dagger and by-knife set

A reproduction of a ballock dagger based off an original from The Musee de l’Armee in Paris, listed as being German or Flemish, 1480-1500.  A few adjustments were made as per the customer’s request with the addition of the by-knife, and tooled scabbard.  The detailing of the scabbard is based off of historical examples from manuscripts.  The pommel caps are engraved bronze and taken to a buffed finish. Overall Length: 15.25″ (ballock dagger) Overall Length: 9″ (by-knife)

Solingen Knives

I have been working on a project that has been on my bucket list since my visit to the Klingen museum, Solingen in 2010. This project includes small knives from the museum and a few from other collections as well. The knives are made of 1050 spring steel, bronze, and woods including kings’ wood and walnut. Each of the bronze elements are individually hand engraved and aged to highlight the details.
